STEM education is a priority for the school. Linked to careers and enrichment it is supported by a number of local STEM employers and competitions. Every year we run a structured work experience programme with both Arconic manufacturingUK and Birmingham Airport. The Arconic Foundation have also provided us with over $90 000 of funding for our STEM Centre. With help from additional grants this enabled us to open an Engineering Laboratory in September 2019.
Every year the school also hosts a local qualifying round for the Faraday Challenge. Year eight also undertake the Energy Quest programme on one of our Topic Days.
In 2019 the school were successful in writing a 160 000 Euro grant application to run a STEM related multinational school partnership. The project, called Space Race, will involve schools in Spain, Germany, and French Guiana exploringan imaginary planet using drones, robots, and ROVs. Funded by this project the school now has STEM clubs running after school to enter the following competitions:
· FIRST Tech Challenge
· First Lego League
· Green Power Electric Power Project
Throughout the year there are also STEM related lectures and presentations as well as events as part of Topic Days.
